Book Cover Wellbeing At Work

A very warm welcome to those linking from the College of Policing membership site. The aim of this site is to promote Wellbeing in the workplace.

Positioning yourself can be particularly difficult, and what I definitely do not want this site to become is one full of tales of woe. I therefore wish to maintain a focus on the positive, my overall goal being to offer up sustainable Wellbeing approaches to employ within the workplace.

As can be seen from the various models and diagrams scattered around this website, there are numerous methods, ideas and considerations. I will attempt to make the site, over time, a place where you can access the latest research and commentary on workplace Wellbeing; hopefully with a scattering of banter and light humour en route.

Being asked to describe, ‘what is wellbeing’ is quite a tall order, as it means so many things to so many people. What I usually begin any presentation with, is what this means in terms of our working life.  People often describe Wellbeing in physical terms: plenty of exercise, eating the right things, don’t drink too much, don’t smoke, the importance of getting enough sleep; and so on. What we miss out here unfortunately is that this narrative describes but a small piece of the Wellbeing construct, and may be one which most of us have some ideas around controlling and regulating. What is not so obvious perhaps is the impact that Financial Wellbeing, Psychological Wellbeing and Societal Wellbeing have on us as human beings. These are often the areas that ‘catch us out’. On this site, over time, you will see lots of references and help around each of these issues. I would suggest three facets combine to have the most impact on our Wellbeing as a whole, and these are Leadership, Resilience and creating the right Environment for us to successfully experience Meaning and Purpose in our working life.

If you want anything posting on here that you think will be of use to colleagues, please feel free to email me or contact me on Twitter. You should see a Twitter feed over there on the right of the sceeen. Above that you will see some links to the latest articles, drawings, YouTube clips and so on.

If you are studying for any quals, or interested in academic study,  don't forget to join our Academic Support Network on POLKA, it's never too late to learn!

You may also want to read our latest book, Managing Health and Wellbeing in the Public Sector

We also have a forthcoming book, out late 2018 called: Wellbeing at Work: How to Design, Implement and Evaluate an Effective Strategy

I hope you enjoy...
